Butler

Butler’s location was chosen due to its convenient placement as the halfway point of the 100-mile distance between Macon and Columbus, Georgia. Hence Butler being known as the Fifty Mile Station. The city was named after General William Orlando Butler, a distinguished soldier who served in the Mexican-American War and later became a vice president candidate, having run on a ticket with General Lewis Cass. 

 

While some may assume the small population and quiet setting comes with a lack of entertainment. The fact is that Butler is near many things to do. Whether you enjoy the animal shows at the Rock Ranch or the Wild Animal Safari, the history at Roosevelt’s Little White House, or the Prisoner of War Museum, knowledge-seekers will have no shortage of opportunities to learn. While Butler may have people visiting for many different reasons, one in particular stands out. Tales of ghost sightings and people hearing footsteps, or the feeling of otherworldly presences abound. Some say this is due to the Central Georgia Railway, and the city itself being built on the Creek Indians’ land. Just a short drive from Butler is the Windsor Hotel. Opened in 1892 and the location of a speech by a young Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Windsor is known for strange noises, such as women’s screams and babies’ crying, specifically on the third floor. These sounds are attributed to a mother and daughter who were pushed down an elevator shaft in the early 1900s.
