Legend has it that Everett originally wanted to call it Fox Valley, but his handwriting was so poor that its name was misread by officials as Fort Valley. Another story has it that Everett named the town after his friend, Arthur Fort, a hero of the Revolutionary War. However it got its name, interestingly enough, the town has never had a military fort within city limits.Â

Fort Valley offers aÂ
wide variety of activities for tourists. The Go Fish Education Center is located in Perry, Georgia only eight miles from Fort Valley. The center teaches visitors about Georgia’s water wildlife and their natural habitats. The Go Fish Education Center also exhibits in large tanks the various kinds of fish found within Georgia’s swamps, coastal plains, piedmont areas and the mountains. Tourists can try out hunting simulations, or the saltwater and freshwater simulations. Plus, there’s a pond where tourists can practice their angling skills. There’s also a large gift store on site.Â
Â
Because Fort Valley is known as the Peach Capital of Georgia, tourists should be sure to stop at Lane Southern Orchards. This historic orchard has been growing peaches since 1908. It boasts the juiciest peaches in the state. Lane Southern Orchards also grows pecans. It’s easy to find. Take exit 142 off I-75 and drive just five minutes. There’s a market, a cafe and of course, gorgeous orchards full of lush, delicious peaches.Â
Â
Fort Valley gets approximately 47 inches of rain on average per year, that’s 105 days of precipitation. No surprise, this area is very humid and hot in the summer. Average temps for July are in the low 90’s and the average temps in January are in the low 40’s. This area gets a good amount of tornadoes every spring and summer, an above average amount for Georgia.Â
Â
Because of Fort Valley’s propensity for humidity, homeowners must give extra attention to the outside of their houses. Pressure washing not only cleans but also restores and prevents further damage to your home caused by weather. Pressure washing is also important for business owners. Commercial spaces such as car lots, walkways, parking decks or parking lots with high pedestrian traffic must keep areas free of dirt and debris.Â
